I will try to look at this soon.

My Linux systems are still using the packages from pkgsrc-wip and not the 
new gettext-tools package.

In my case (and for over a year) on Linux, I have just used gettext-tools 
without the corresponding gettext-lib package. I don't have any 
gettext-lib package installed. I don't use -lintl either as that is 
provided by default in GLIBC on Linux systems.

I'll let you know what I find ...
