This is broken for shells that reject empty for iteration.

Can you name a shell that is broken by this and that can actually appear as the bmake shell?

Search the history? There is a reason why the test for zero idiom is
used here. ...which wasn't even removed.

Did that, found nothing. Thanks for noting the zero idiom, I removed it.
