Yes, agreed, I had been building glib2 for years *before* the libelf dependency 
was introduced. I guess my question really was *why* the libelf dependency was 
introduced at all. glib2 has been building fine without it for me on 
SunOS/SmartOS and it doesn't seem to even have *any* reference to libelf in its 
source.

It was added by drochner to devel/glib2/Makefile in 1.199, and there's no clear 
explanation on why. I'd just regard it as erroneous, unless someone can explain 
on why it was needed.

Jonathan explained in the other thread that it was added to support the gresource tool, and he questioned that the cost of having gresource (not having LFS) is too much.

I suggested having the gresource tool not built by default on SunOS, but have it as a selectable option.
