Ok.

I think the autoconf set up could be better i.e. look for awk first.
Then the message would read "checking for awk... /usr/bin/awk" which is
less confusing.

It is reasonable checking gawk first (and awk last), because on some platforms,
default plain awk is too old (and/or too poor).
