The reason "!  -z" was used was for...  well, let's take a vendor at
random, call them Moon for example, and look at their compatibility
test(1b) manual page:

        http://www.shrubbery.net/solaris9ab/SUNWaman/hman1b/test.1b.html

and there is no "-n" option to that version of test(1).

Now it may be that we are sure that their UCB compatibility directory
is not in the PATH before the rest of them, but, just in case it is,
and remember, porting to ummm Moon and, emmm Lunaris, was done in
early 1999, and it's easy to understand why that construct was used.

(I'm not asking that this be reverted, BTW, just giving context).
