Not exactly, not everyone will have updated their Perl package as soon as they pull down the latest Pkgsrc. At least, not until we force them to with PERL5_REQDs.

Besides. Pkgsrc comes from CVS - there's no reason users can't check out (E.g.) HEAD of everything else, and version 5.8.8 of lang/perl5. It's a useful strategy for managing change, to just CVS update the packages you want to see updated.

The p5-version DESCR states that the package does nothing if there's a system installed version. If correct, I don't think it has any use in the post 5.10 world does it? Even if it's a later p5-version version, it sounds to me like the changes will only be relevant to a pre-5.10 perl?

By that reading, p5-version is useless in Pkgsrc if we prefer to PERL5_REQD force updates to 5.10, over continuing support for a period for pre-5.10 Perl users. That is, a policy to both use PERL5_REQD=5.10.0 and also not remove p5-version seems inconsistent.
