Do we really need non-ascii characters in log messages? (I have
replaced the non-ascii characters with hex escapes to highlight them.)

No.
I is just due to lack of attention + too good support for those non-ascii characters in my editor of choice.

Would it be possible to add a check for non-ascii characters preventing commits if they are present ? That would help avoiding such situations. A more constant attention from me could also be a solution, but is much more dependent from environmental constraints.
