This might be related to PR pkg/22483.
I've found indeed that the signal mask is set to nonsense
between the fork() end the exec("gs").
The PR blames the "GNOME" environment but doesn't tell
which process was the parent, wasn't able to reproduce yet.

I somehow suspect the pthread lib. Will post my impressions
to one of the tech- lists when I've tried some more.
I might be completely wrong...
