Agreed, this is suboptimal.
I'll give the USE_MSGFMT_PLURALS a test and change the pkg
if it works. Just didn't see a mention of that option.
Imho this doesn't belong into gettext-lib.

That's kind of sloppyness which is present at many places...
Has anybody ever tried to install different pkgs into
different PREFIXes?
