The "change without notice" part above wasn't the intention when we
started naming variables in such a way in pkgsrc - it was so that
people could identify the ones that they could modify, and the ones
that the system used.

As for ${_PRESERVE_WRKDIR} itself, I don't consider it really a
private name - I added it to allow me to look properly through what
the problems were in some packages, but not for everything (I hadn't
even tried to calculate space considerations for that).  So it's
really a user-settable variable, I just didn't want everyone setting
it.
