 Looking at the compiler flags again I notice that there are no -L/usr/ 
 pkg/lib. That would appear to be the problem. I was mistaking the  
 rpath linker flag with the library search parameter. I unfortunately  
 do not know enough about pkgsrc internals to fix this.
