This was actually a problem with my system.  Something stomped all over /dev
and changed /dev/null and /dev/tty into normal files.  This caused the Perl
build to fail, and at first I did not notice the linker acrobatics in the
Linux build.  Now that I fixed /dev, the build works fine.
