 the make configure leads in the error, of course. 
 
 grep -i fixes work/.extract_makevars.mk gets:
 
 H_XFIXESPROTO=  /usr/openwin/include/X11/extensions/xfixesproto.h
 H_XFIXESWIRE=   /usr/openwin/include/X11/extensions/xfixeswire.h
 IS_BUILTIN.fixesproto=  yes
 USE_BUILTIN.fixesproto= yes
