Vmware 3 starts working with a black screen if DISPLAY is not set to localhost:0 .
The problem is that vmware doesn't recognize 'localhost' or '127.0.0.1' as a local machine. That's why it can't
switch in full screen mode.
A parcial-sized screen of vmware starting can be seen in a virtual console (try ctrl+alt+f{2|3|...})
if DISPLAY is not tweaked.

Install and start emulators/vmware3 without modifying the variable DISPLAY. Try changing virtual consoles.
