as long as the wscons screens are in text mode, it should be possible
to add hooks to the qemu code to make the text available to a screen
reader. However, this seems unnecessary complex to me.

The most popular choice for virtual text consoles is to use the screen
program. It works fine over a kermit emulation and a blind friend,
who is Solaris system administrator, is using screen this way.

You can find screen in pkgsrc.
