i can feel a headache coming on already. :)

/usr/local is perfect for this, and its also matches what many other 
unix systems do.

offcourse administrators can choose another scheme.
forexample to have different versions of a tool, without collisions.

i think there was a pkgsrc discussion recently to that effect, so you 
could have different versions of packages.
