Looking at the output more closely, it appears to be a USB problem.

The keyboard works OK in (what i assume is) the boot loader.

But just before the installation screen comes up, at the end of all the
kernel messages, i see this:

uhub0: device problem, disabling port2.

I've tried two different USB keyboards (the Dell that came with the
system and a Sun type-6 USB) and both generate errors, in whichever of the
6 USB ports they are plugged into.

I'm pretty sure the hardware is OK (as well as the USB "hub" onboard),
because i'm using the same hardware to type this message, but running
Kubuntu.

The latest FreeBSD current ISO installer (April '07) has a similar
problem -- it also complains about a USB error, and the keyboard does not
work at the installation screen.
