For ATA drives, pkgsrc/sysutils/smartmontools is your best friend.  It will
monitor the SMART data from the drive, which typically can warn of impending
failure because of lack of available remap blocks.  However, it's best if
you start using smartd *before* a failure so that it can monitor.  8-)
