Yes, the same thing happens.

However, on further investigation I found the drive works when using ehci 
(the original test machine did not support ehci). So it's probably more of 
a hardware bug when not using USB 2.0 (it doesn't work with Linux 2.4 or 
2.6 either under these circumstances).

When I newfsed the partition it hammered the (ehci) machine. It took over 
3 hours and during that time it took about 10 minutes to get to a login 
prompt! The output of bonnie doesn't look so bad though:
