Hm, I was at this point but noted the "work" symlinks in pkgsrc.

So I tried again with WRKOBJDIR and mounted pkgsrc read-only.

Now the symlinks -well, of course- don't get created, but the system
also doesn't claim about this.

Bug or feature (well, in my case, it's a feature) ?
