Quite apart from the other problems I've had, I plugged in an old 105MB
IDE disk that takes up two PCMCIA slots (a Type III, if I recall correctly).
Here's what the attach messages said:

wdc2 at pcmcia1 function 0
atabus2 at wdc2 channel 0
wd1 at atabus2 drive 0: <Maxtor MXL-105-III PCMCIA Drive>
wd1: drive supports 16-sector PIO transfers, LBA addressing
wd1: 311 GB, 2560273 cyl, 15 head, 17 sec, 512 bytes/sect x 652869635 sectors

No way it's 311 GB...

fdisk gave more reasonable data, though I wouldn't vouch for the
sizes of the two partitions:

# fdisk wd1
Disk: /dev/rwd1d
NetBSD disklabel disk geometry:
cylinders: 2560273, heads: 15, sectors/track: 17 (255 sectors/cylinder)
total sectors: 652869635

BIOS disk geometry:
cylinders: 1024, heads: 15, sectors/track: 17 (255 sectors/cylinder)
total sectors: 652869635

Partition table:
0: Primary 'big' DOS, 16-bit FAT (> 32MB) (sysid 6)
    start 17, size 204748 (100 MB, Cyls 0-803)
1: BSDI? (sysid 159)
    start 204765, size 1642 (1 MB, Cyls 803-809/6/11), Active
