Thanks to all who replied.

I guess it would be nice to use USB joysticks via /dev/joy? so all
applications could see them.  However,  Christian Biere kindly wrote
a patch for VICE to add SDL joystick support, and after some testing,
the patch seems to work just fine.  Thanks a lot, Christian!

I'll send the patch to VICE maintainers after some more testing.
