i'd suggest you to use cvs over ssh instead in this case.  it'll save
you trouble.

e.g.

  $ CVS_RSH=3Dssh cvs -d anoncvs@anoncvs.netbsd.org:/cvsroot {commands}

might be a bit slower depending on cpu, though.
