I had similar problems on alpha (+gnome) and I haven't had time for the 
PR yet, see if commenting out --enable-hard-syscall on devel/pth/Makefile
and rebuilding it helps. I didn't do make update, just
# FORCE_PKG_REGISTER=1 make all install clean

Made galeon and gnome happy.
