I tried with a 486/50 and a 768kbit/s link.
CPU power was not enough, bandwith was limited (note that I used the MSS
clamping option in rp-pppoe, which eats quite a lot of CPU power).

With the in-kernel pppoe(4) the CPU useage dropped to below 10% while 
delivering full bandwidth.
