i did bare, not using pkgsrc, install Festival 1.4.2 ..
those scripts work.

Alan W Black <awb@cs.cmu.edu> told me it could be a c++ probl. at NetBSD.

didn't do a bare 1.4.1 install yet.
(so not sure if it's the NetBSD patches or the compiler)
