I do, the other 2 lines are in there in case named ever dies on its arse.
(It's a caching nameserver, but looks after a few internal domains as well).

What I was asking is why ftp isn't resolving the name when 
dig and host do?

A ktrace shows it's appending my local domain to the name, presumably
because it doesn't like the CNAME???
