I've tried this, and still on subsequent restarts of 'startx', I get an 
error message that the
window manager doesn't do everything gnome expects it to. There are a 
couple of wyrd artifacts as well,
in that when I switch from one window manager to another, then back 
again, niffty little
'virtual screen' icons appear in the top right section of the tool bar...
