here is vmstat -s & -m for netbsd just after boot to single user:

vmstat -s:

     4096 bytes per page
    31889 pages managed
    29377 pages free
      226 pages active
      108 pages inactive
        0 pages paging
       13 pages wired
    29377 zero pages
        1 reserve pagedaemon pages
        5 reserve kernel pages
       64 minimum free pages
       85 target free pages
        0 target inactive pages

vmstat -m:

In use 43K, total allocated 144K; utilization 30.5%

sum:

29377+226+108+13+1+5+(144/4)=29766 which is 116M as reported on boot

NetBSD 1.5 (local) #4: Fri Feb 16 12:03:13 CET 2001
    wojtek@wojtek.from.pl:/usr/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/local
cpu0: Intel Pentium/MMX (586-class)
total memory = 127 MB
avail memory = 116 MB

BUT:

after full boot, etc. it's like:

     4096 bytes per page
    31889 pages managed
    20350 pages free
     7490 pages active
      487 pages inactive
        0 pages paging
      121 pages wired
    20345 zero pages
        1 reserve pagedaemon pages
        5 reserve kernel pages

In use 802K, total allocated 956K; utilization 83.9%

20350+7490+487+121+1+5+(956/4)=28693

29766-28693=1073

1073 pages is almost 4MB!!!!!

where is my memory? ;)

similar sums i've got with 8MB or 16MB memory and i think it's a problem
why with 8MB memory even reduced configuration systems go VERY slow and
constantly swaps.

where is a problem?
