If I remember correctly telnet has beeing passing $DISPLAY to the remote
session for over a decade now.

As for changing it to ':0', well that sounds a whole lot more like
you're using SSH and not telnet....

In which case it might eventually have worked -- though if your
connection was low-bandwidth you might still have been trying to query
your X server for font and colour information when you interrupted it.
