I'm using various versions of the 3c589 in about a half dozen machines
running various versions of NetBSD (and, sadly, one running Linux
because we couldn't get our IPIP tunnel quite working right under
NetBSD). In my experience they just always work.

A quick search at shopper.com shows the 3C589D-TP in stock at $100
at PC Zone.
