The driver I use most (if_ed) supports the SMC/WD and NE2000, but I'm 
currently using an SMC Ultra 16 in a couple of i486 boxes ... doing ok.  
One particular machine with this card is a multicast router and an NFS 
server ...

However, I made a point of getting a 3c509 for a couple of Pentium 
machines here ...
