well, for instance, on some ISA systems, you can have > 16M with no problems.

how?  If you don't do DMA, you'll be fine.  that's rational (and
normal, in fact), if you have a system with a 'wd' disk, and with a
non-DMA network board, and either don't have (or don't use) your floppy.
