It's been our ("core"'s) policy (as i've interpreted it, at least 8-)
that we don't give out information about ports in progress. There are
several reasons to do this:
First, and most importantly, people who are doing ports generally have
very little free time, as it is, and there's no point in having them
be barraged by a flurry of "how's it going?" messages.
Second, we want to know who's working on ports, and who's interested
in working on ports, so we can facilitate their development. That
means that, to find out who's doing a port (assuming the porter
doesn't announce their work, themselves), we want people to go through
us. (This also solves the time/privacy concern in a reasonable way:
if people are interested in working on a port, if somebody's already
working on it we'll do what we can to get the worker in touch with the
person displaying interest.)
In my personal opinion, the time to do a port is approximately:
C * (hardware difficulty) * (number of people working on the port)
