Java's special char handling

Hello ppl

I cannot type in special characters as e.g. Umlauts (äoü); however, they
can be showed. I have LC_ALL set correspondingly -- all others non-Java apps 
are working in that sense.

Is there some setting to be made? It's Java v1.5.0.6 from pkgsrc.
