And they sometimes get it wrong. Duplex mismatches are hard to locate - since
things work under low load.

Actually, rather than 'hard wiring' the ports, it can be better to set the ANAR
(auto-negotiate advertise register) to only allow the single mode of operation
you want.  Provided the other system isn't a 10M hub, or a 10/100M hub that uses
'autosensing', they they PHYs will fail to align with each other if there is a
mismatch.
