Thanks James for your reply. Could you please be more specific. I am used to 
Ubuntu not Netbsd, so to install a package mplayerplug-in what is the 
command I give?

Use pkgsrc!

pkgsrc can do builds and *installs* as non-root right in your own home
directory.

Also pkgsrc provides patches and configurations that may be needed for
NetBSD for mplayer and related.
