Due to a suggestioin off-list from another subscriber, I tried
launching these browsers (firefox-gtk1 & mozilla-bin) as su. Bingo. I
now believe that the launches were failing because the browser
processes had permissions inadequaite to write ~/.mozilla.

Strangely enough, having been launched once by su, the problem
disappeared, in that I could delete ~/.mozilla and restart
successfully the browsers as an ordinary user, and have ~/.mozilla
successfully written.

Needless to add, my tiny cranium is not big enough to figure out why
ANY of these of things is happening! <g>

Thanks,

No no no, my fish's name is Eric, Eric the fish. He's an halibut. I am
not a looney! Why should I be tarred with the epithet looney merely
because I have a pet halibut?
