As domainname(1) tells you, it sets the NIS (formerly YP (Yellow Pages))
domain name.  This is NOT related to the "DNS domainname".

In case you're familiar with SMB/Samba (Windows networking), you can
compare it to the "workgroup" name.

In order to set a FQDN, just set your hostname to something like
'myhost.foo.com'.
