One slight demurrer: my Dell 20" flat panel -- plus the controller with 
a Dell 8400 -- did not work under XFree86; I had to switch to Xorg.  
The impression I have is that the issue was XFree86's ability to get 
the resolution right; it worked, but at too low a resolution.
