Yes, it's possible.

Someone posted some scripts to do exactly that.  I recall that he used
named pipes.  (The scripts were then worked over by someone else...)

This was asked about just a couple of months ago.  (^&  As I recall,
at the time, I managed to find the old posting (look for "cdrecord"
and "dump" or "backup" in the NetBSD archives).
