Subject: /mnt disappears after mounting a foreign disk

I have a foreign disk (perhaps a sun) which I mounted at mountpoint
/mnt. A df shows that it is mounted at /mnt. An ls /mnt says "no such
file or directory" or "bad file descriptor", and an ls / shows that /mnt
has vanished! This is on i386 with the endian independent disk support
in the kernel. When I umount /mnt, /mnt returns to the system.

How is this possible? Is this a bug somewhere ???
