Don't type a colon before the i.  Pressing just i brings the editor into 
insert mode.  A ":" brings up a command prompt, and i entered into the 
command prompt brings up "ex" insert mode, which is line-based (more 
suitable to old Teletypes) rather than screen-based mode.

I hope that makes sense.
