Thanks for the tip--it solved the problem! As expected it was dumb
user-error.

I remember changing these values years ago, but I must have
reinstalled since then.

Incidentally, my experience tonight was that /usr/pkg postfix demanded
to use /usr/pkg/etc/postfix to configure. My guess is that this is
because I copied the /usr/pkg/etc/rc.d/postfix script into /etc/rc.d,
and it probably uses /usr/pkg as its root. My guess is the file
doesn't differ much from the default /etc/rc.d/postfix script (or at
all), so it is probably fine to leave the default one installed
(which would keep /etc/postfix as the configuration directory, I
believe).

Anyway, thanks again for your help. On to troubleshooting SASL!
