Many times it is. Personally, I'd perfer to have pixels displayed 1:1.

(speaking only to my knowledge of knoppix)
ISOLINUX is configured to immediately do things using a basic text/graphics 
mode. The kernel is configured to use the video card as a framebuffer 
[bitmapped pictures] rather than the primitive VGA text mode (if you want to 
know more about this look for a VGA programing tutorial from the early to mid 
90s). To my knowledge NetBSD's wscons (at least on port i386) uses the text 
mode of the card.
