Ah...I didn't (don't) know how pap/chap works.  I have a pap-secrets;
back in Kansas City, I believe that my ISP told me that they used
pap, but they couldn't tell me much more, so I dug out enough to
write a /etc/ppp/peers/<isp> and /etc/pap-secrets, but I never
really could tell if it was using that info, since I also had a
login:/Password:, and it all just worked.  I guess I never felt the
need to delete parts and see what was really required...
