I spoke too soon.

You were 100% on spot Manuel - the cpu fan was clogged. The heatsink was 
burninghot.

Replacing the heatsink with a larger fan seems to have solved the problem! 
Changing the memory also... although I still get pci_mem: void region 
messages on boot.

Thanks for your help! I would have been pretty stuck without the fan idea 
;)
