When everything "works", you would see a scsibus attatched to the umass
device, which would in turn have sd or cd devices attached to it. An ide
type disk device (wd) can attatch directly to a umass device. See man umass
for more info. 

An expert on tweaking usb stuff may be able to help you if you can provide
them with more info about the device and your system, e.g. the output of
usbdevs -v, uname -a, etc...
