No one had any ideas, so I took the plunge and upgraded to
-currentish, pkg_deleted -r pth and every pkg in X11R6, installed
xpkgwedge, and pkg_added from my notebook.

Now gnome2 is just bloated-slow, and not unbelievably slow.  evolution
1.4.5, galeon, nautilus all seem to work fine.
