Let me prefix my question with the fact that I had KDE and kdm up and
running just fine. Something got stuck in KDE, I rebooted, and now I cannot
get it back. I tried to reinstall KDE, I have even tried a complete
reinstall of NetBSD. I cannot figure out the exact sequence of steps I
performed to get KDE and kdm to work the first time.

Therefore, my question is what steps do you follow to install and configure
KDE/kdm? Please do not ask me to upgrade or recompile or anything like
that; if you use KDE/kdm, how do you go about installing it on a brand new
box?

Here are the steps I followed unsuccessfully:

1. Boot off CD 8 of 8 from the 1.6.1 i386pkg
2. Configure network settings within sysinst
3. install
3.a. use a default disklabel "standard with X"
3.b. full install -- all sets
4. reboot and login as root
5. xf86cfg to configure X
6. startx
7. pkg_add kde -- should install 3.0.5.1 from disk 1 of 8 of 1.6.1 i368pkg
(7.a. complains about ghost script, but it did the first time as well; I
know I can fix it by installing ghostscript from some other CD first; so I
am not concerned)
8. reboot and login as root
9. startx
10. startkde from within X and personalize KDE -- this works, but it is not
as good as kdm
11. reboot and login as root
12. kdm

When I attempt to login to kdm, it just brings me right back to the login
screen. Eventually, after a couple attempts, it goes back to the prompt
stating it restarted too fast or something like that.

Note that if I run xdm instead; it, too, seems to have a problem as it will
prompt for a session, and the only option is "fail safe" or something. When
I select this option, the screen is empty with just the "X" mouse pointer.

If you use KDE/kdm, what steps do you follow?

Thanks,
Chris.
